Please; We Need Your Help!
The Asian Hornet (Vespa velutina) found its way to into France where it is causing problems and now appears to be spreading to other parts in Europe. In 2016 a colony was discovered near Tetbury in Gloucestershire which was successfully dealt with by the authorities. The hornet (pictured below) specializes in attacking and killing honey bees and there are real concerns that it is only a matter of time before it becomes established in the UK. Bee keepers throughout the UK are looking out for the hornet but they could do with some extra help. If you see or come across the Asian Hornet, then please please contact us via e-mail. It would be really helpful if you could provide the location and a picture (but only if it is safe to do so) so that we can confirm that it is the Asian Hornet and not the native European Hornet (Vespa crabro). If we are confident that your sighting is indeed the Asian Hornet then we will notify the relevant people. Early detection could very well help prevent the Asian Hornet becoming established in the UK and our bees need all the help that they can get.
